Beyond the Binary Training:Inclusive Healthcare & Celebrating Pride

At our latest Beyond the Binary session, healthcare providers from Kisumu gathered to explore what it truly means to offer inclusive, affirming care. The session covered essential healthcare ethics principles— veracity, beneficence, autonomy, justice, fidelity, and nonmaleficence —each playing a vital role in ensuring that all patients, including LBQT individuals, receive respectful and equitable treatment. Participants discussed real-world barriers to ethical decision-making, navigating dilemmas that arise in clinical settings and reflecting on how systemic inequalities impact healthcare access.

One of the most eye-opening moments came during the privilege walk activity, where providers recognised the disparities within the room. Many participants realised for the first time how economic stability impacts healthcare access and the privilege of being able to afford essential services. These conversations led to powerful takeaways on advocating for equitable healthcare and bridging gaps for underserved communities.

But it wasn’t all theory! We kept the session engaging with a Pride-themed trivia break, where attendees explored the history of Pride, the significance of each colour in the Progress Flag, and the resilience that fuels the movement today. Before the training, many providers felt uncertain about discussing queer health topics within their institutions. By the end of the session, confidence had grown, and participants shared that they now feel empowered to foster inclusive healthcare conversations within their workplaces.
