Advancing Inclusive Climate Action in Kisumu
On November 29, 2024, stakeholders convened in Kisumu, for a transformative meeting on Queering Climate Actions, aimed at amplifying LBQT voices in climate governance. Facilitated by Stephen Okwany, the session highlighted barriers LBQT individuals face, including discrimination, exclusion from decision-making, and lack of tailored support during crises.
Discussions revealed that only 7% of LBQT organizations nationwide engage in climate advocacy, underscoring the need for capacity building. Insights from COP28 and COP29 informed recommendations on safe spaces, inclusive policies, and legal protections. A working group was formed to integrate LBQT perspectives into Kisumu’s climate plans.
