International Safe Abortion Day

In celebration of International Safe Abortion Day, 3W hosted an engaging event called to debunk abortion myths within the LBQTI community. The event created an atmosphere of fun, learning, and open dialogue by encouraging participants to challenge misconceptions about abortion.

Participants brought myths they had heard, ranging from “Abortion causes cancer” to “Abortion is a conspiracy by queer persons to control Africa’s population.” They took turns defending these myths in the “Hot Seat,” while others debunked them using facts, personal experiences, and counterarguments. This format combined humour and critical discussions, balancing intense conversations with a playful, game-show-like approach.

The session was divided into two parts: an introduction that set the tone and ground rules, and the Hot Seat round, where debates unfolded. By the end, participants voted on three standout individuals: the person with the most outrageous myth, the best myth-buster, and the best defence.

The event successfully bridged knowledge gaps within the queer community and highlighted areas for further advocacy. It fostered a safe, stigma-free space for participants to engage in meaningful conversations while challenging dangerous abortion myths. 3W gained valuable insights for refining its future safe abortion interventions for LBQTI persons.
