Beyond Binary: Redefining Inclusive HealthCare

We believe inclusive healthcare begins with informed providers. This week, we proudly launched a new cohort of health service providers through our Gender and Sexual Diversity Training, and the results were nothing short of transformative.

We brought together 15 healthcare professionals—clinical and non-clinical—from organisations that serve informal settlements in Kisumu, areas deeply affected by unsafe abortion. Our goal? To build a network of non-discriminatory, LGBTQ+-inclusive  healthcare providers who offer care with knowledge, empathy, and dignity.

The session unpacked SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics) through interactive visuals, real talk, and lived experiences. A transman guest speaker grounded the session in powerful storytelling, helping shift mindsets and unpack harmful assumptions.

We were also joined by a trained counselling psychologist, who guided participants on providing unbiased, empathetic reproductive health services—because compassion is just as critical as clinical skill.

🧠 Key shifts we witnessed:

  • Providers finally understood the difference between intersex and transgender.

  • Many admitted this was their first safe space to ask questions and engage honestly.

  • Feedback was clear: “We want more of these sessions—and more LGBTQ+ people in the room.”

  • One step forward for inclusive care is a giant leap toward health equity.

💪🏾 This is how we’re queering care, challenging stigma, and building a future where every LBQT person can access safe, respectful abortion care—without fear, judgment, or barriers.
