SRHR Convening
Over three transformative days at Ciala Resort in Kisumu, Kenyan advocates and partner organisations convened to tackle the persistent challenge of safe abortion access. Against the backdrop of dwindling political will and mounting misinformation, this gathering reaffirmed reproductive rights as fundamental human rights—echoing the landmark commitments first made at the 1994 Cairo ICPD. Participants from across the country engaged in plenary sessions, lively group work, and on‑site facility tours, all designed to strengthen collective strategies for advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Kenya.
A highlight of the convening was Professor Khama Rogo’s keynote address, which skillfully traced our journey from Cairo’s bold vision to today’s complex reality, illuminating both the strides made and the roadblocks ahead. Delegates then broke into working groups to co‑create long‑term advocacy solutions tailored to Kenya’s unique context—ensuring that policy recommendations are grounded in grassroots experience. Complementing these strategic discussions, a lakeside field trip provided space for reflection and bonding, reminding all that true innovation often springs from moments of shared inspiration and serenity.
By the event’s close, stakeholders had forged new alliances, sharpened their understanding of safe abortion access, and agreed on coordinated actions to influence policy and funding landscapes. Visits to KMET’s clinics showcased resilient models of community‑led healthcare delivery, underscoring the vital role of civil society organisations in sustaining SRHR progress. As we move forward, the momentum generated will guide our collective push for equitable, rights‑based reproductive health services across Kenya.
