Pussy Power: Vagina Holders are not lesser human beings.
Last week in our abortion and the Law knowledge training Facilitated by Advocate Vera Onsongo we got a chance to learn about the history of abortion laws and the various cases that have influenced the current laws such as the Roe V. Wade case in 1973 and its amended ruling in 2022, The Pak and Salim Case where, On March 24, 2022, the High Court of Kenya affirmed abortion as a fundamental right under the 2010 Constitution of Kenya and ruled that the arbitrary arrests and prosecution of patients and health care providers for seeking or offering abortion services are illegal.
In its ruling, the Court directed the Kenyan parliament to enact an abortion law and public policy framework that aligns with the Constitution. We also got to understand Fetal Personhood and the trimester framework. Our Facilitator was well versed with knowledge and even further gave us guidelines on the rights and freedoms that access to safe abortion falls under in our constitution :
- Freedom of Equality
- Right to Privacy
- The Right to Healthcare (holistically)
- Freedom of Thought
But don’t just take our word for it, one of our participants went further to research and gave a summary and overview on the training in an article on LinkedIn. Check out Sellah’s article here: We are excited for the next training where we learn even more about what the penal code states about abortion and much more check out our events section for more details. Till then remember
Vagina Holders are not Lesser human beings.
