Safe Abortion Advocacy Starter Pack

Our COBAST Safe Abortion Training was an immersive, hands-on experience designed to equip participants with the essential tools and knowledge needed to be effective safe abortion advocates. From crafting powerful, rights-based messaging to understanding legal frameworks and addressing stigma, we explored how to strategically communicate about abortion in ways that are inclusive, affirming, and grounded in empathy. We also delved into practical strategies for community buy-in—how to engage gatekeepers, challenge myths, and build trust within diverse communities, especially in contexts where abortion remains highly stigmatized.

A core focus of the training was the inclusion of LBQT persons in safe abortion advocacy. We unpacked the unique barriers faced by queer individuals—such as discrimination in healthcare, invisibility in policy, and lack of access to affirming information—and explored ways to center their realities in our advocacy work. Through interactive sessions, storytelling, and values clarification exercises, participants developed skills to champion inclusive, gender-expansive SRHR approaches that recognize the bodily autonomy and rights of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
